This 2600mAh monster battery is said to more than double the capacity on the standard battery that shipped with your beloved G1 phone.

The extended battery from Innocell also comes with a soft-touch ‘rubberised’ back cover to accomodate the thicker battery, but will only increase the depth profile of your G1 by 5mm. A small price to pay for an extra few days of life…..

Google unveils G1; aimed straight at BlackBerry, iPhone

T-Mobile Tuesday unveiled its new Google-powered G1 mobile phone, the search giant’s long-awaited answer to Apple’s red-hot iPhone.

The G1, which has iPhone-like features – such as a touch-sensitive screen, Internet access and a music player – runs on Google’s new operating system, Android.

“This is the first real alternative to the iPhone in terms of a cool, touch-screen device,” said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Mobiledevicestoday.com. “It gives Google a chance to stake their claim in the mobile phone market.”

The new smartphone, made by Taiwan’s HTC Corp., goes on sale Oct. 22. It will cost $179 with a two-year T-Mobile contract – just below the iPhone’s starting price of $199. Users will have to pay $25 per month for data on top of their calling plans.

The phone has a dedicated button for Internet searches and will come packed with lots of Google applications like Google Maps with StreetView, Gmail and YouTube.

“This basically takes Google services and makes them mobile in a very big way,” Gartenberg said.

Unlike the iPhone, the G1 slides open to expose a full keyboard, which could attract heavy e-mail users. The phone also adds a trackball – something like the one on some of RIM’s Blackberry devices – for navigation.

It also comes pre-loaded with software that connects users to Amazon.com’s music store, giving them access to 6 million songs, and further pitting the device against Apple’s iPhone and its iTunes service.

But whether it’s got the right stuff to knock out the iPhone, iPod and Mac-maker, which sold a million of its latest version of the iPhone in the first weekend that it was out, remains to be seen, analysts said.

“It’s not necessarily all that different from what’s out in the marketplace right now,” said Lance Ulanoff, editor in chief of PC Magazine.

A large number of players in the mobile phone market may make it tough for Google to grab a big piece of the pie, Ulanoff said.
